Calling aspiring Bauhauslers of all ages. Join us for a one-day event to celebrate art, life and friendship, inspired by the joyous Bauhaus community. Festivities run throughout the day and include workshops on kite-making with specialist Karl Longbottom, creating puppets with Bauhaus stage expert Melissa Trimingham and a accessories making class led by designer Fred Butler, plus much more.
The evening entertainment begins with the lecture demonstration Play Bauhaus – Jam Out by Torsten Blume director of the Bauhaus Stage in Dessau and dancer Yun-Ju Chen . Then see out the night with the Barbican’s first ever Costume Party!

Bauhaus by Day Bauhaus by Day runs from 12 – 6pm and features an exciting range of free, creative events for those aged 5+
Free Creative Workshops 12 – 2pm & 3.30 – 6pm Garden Room (Level 3) Ages 5+ Free - sign-up on the day to take part
Puppet Making Workshops Led by Bauhaus stage expert Melissa Trimingham, make your own hand puppets using found material. The sessions are inspired by the playful puppets Bauhaus Master Paul Klee created for his son Felix, several of which are exhibited as part of bauhaus: art as Life.
Kite Making Workshops Learn how to build kites with specialist, Karl Longbottom and echo the Bauhaus’s own kite festivals. Test out your creation between 2 – 3pm on the Barbican Sculpture Court, adjacent to Barbican Art Gallery (level 3), surrounded by the iconic architecture of the Estate.
WHAT_architecture presents Legobusier©: a Lego Meets Le Corbusier Modern Architecture Master Class. Using Le Corbusier’s Five Points of Architecture as the starting point, alongside the architecture of the Bauhaus, Junior Open House Festival’s giant Lego city invites you to use the iconic building blocks to create your own modernist imaginings. The individual designs will feed into a modern city, a growing Legoland. This workshop is also open to night revellers attending the Bauhaus Costume Party.
Accessory Making Drop-In Session 6.30 – 8.30pm Barbican Conservatory Terrace (Level 4) Ages 14+ Free
Designer Fred Butler, whose clients include Lady Gaga and Björk, leads an accessory making drop-in session. Make your very-own Bauhaus inspired accessories to take away or wear to the Barbican Costume Party.
Book Launch 2 – 3pm Barbican Foyer Free Stage Area (Level G) Free
Enjoy a glass of wine whilst artist Ian Whittlesea introduces his new book Mazdaznan Health & Breath Culture (based on the 1940 original text) with David Falkner, director of the Stanley Picker Gallery. The book is part of a series of artist commissions for No Competition at Kingston University’s Stanley Picker Gallery. Mazdaznan Health & Breath Culture is available for purchase on the day.
Bauhaus by Night
Performance Lecture: Play Bauhaus 6 – 7.30pm (approximate finishing time) Location TBC Free – but spaces may be limited
Torsten Blume, curator and stage director, from the Bauhaus Foundation in Dessau and dancer Yun-Ju Chen give a special performance lecture to illustrate the ideas of play bauhaus . This ongoing series of experiments, actions, installations and performances was initiated in 2007 and is based on the idea of the historic Bauhaus theatre as a laboratory for aesthetically aware bodily and spatial movements.
Bauhaus Costume Party Barbican Conservatory and Garden Room 8pm – midnight Barbican Conservatory and Garden Room £8 online / £10 on the door Ages 18+
In honour of the Bauhaus' famous parties, we're inviting guests to get creative with a themed Bauhaus Costume Party. Prizes awarded for the best dressed guest! The party on into the night with a DJ set from Kwes (Warp Records), a Bauhaus-inspired performance by celebrated artist Ryan Styles and jazz sets from the Joshua Jawson Quartet.
