Spend a surreal evening of spectacular music and hypnotic activities with us at our special summer LATES!
Are you planning to wander the labyrinthine corridors of The Surreal House exhibition in the Art Gallery? Or to hear the seductive melodies and bossa-nova style of Tropicalia legend Caetano Veloso in the Hall or watch the latest work by Brazilian choreographer Deborah Colker in the Theatre?
Then come early and stay late and enjoy a variety of surreal events taking place throughout the evening in our foyers for free. With a dedicated LATES Lounge to chill out in, there’s something for everyone to while away a glorious summer evening.

Tours at 5.45, 7 & 9pm Barbican Art Gallery Mike Chavez Dawson & Len Horsey: Re-Motive Views Selling The Surreal House as if it were a real house, let the self-styled “For Surreal” estate agents take you on an unusual tour of the exhibition, igniting your curiosity with strange tales, time-share sales techniques and bizarre ritual. The tour will culminate in a song of great joy performed at various points throughout the Centre, as you, the buyers, celebrate shared ownership of The Surreal House. Free to same-day exhibition ticket holders.
6pm–midnight Barbican Foyer Area 10: Knowledge of The Hidden
Join experimental arts project group Area 10 for an evening of occult
and paranormal arts, live performance, film, and experiments.
Installations on the night include brain wave reading by Ryan Jordan
and Mick Grierson; a journey through 4000 years of human culture with
Nick Lambert’s Oculus, James Elphick’s Dream Machines, and more.
6.30–7.15pm Barbican Freestage, Level G Asphalt Orchestra Asphalt Orchestra is a radical new street band that brings ambitious processional music to the mobile masses. Created in 2009 by the founders Bang On A Can, Asphalt Orchestra unleashes innovative music from the concert halls, rock clubs and jazz basements and takes it to the streets. Choreographed and tight, this is the future of the marching band.
6.30pm–midnight Lates Lounge DJ Andrea Parker Andrea Parker is a cellist, singer, DJ and producer with a unique sensibility, a fascination with vintage electronics and a taste for "found sounds". Parker has remixed the likes of Steve Reich, Depeche Mode and Ryuichi Sakamoto, and recently performed live with the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Experience her distinctive sounds in the Lates Lounge throughout the evening.
9.30–10.15pm Barbican Clubstage, Level -1 Tokyo-Chutei-Iki
A band like no other, Tokyo-Chutei-Iki, meaning “Tokyo-Bass Frequency”,
consists of an amazing twelve baritone sax players who combine
psychedelic melodies and vocals with a theatrical performance style;
this sub-sonic jazz attack is sure to be an infectious, head-spinning
