Please note that soprano Marie Arnet replaces the originally advertised Susan Bullock in this concert. Beethoven Triple Concerto Tippett Symphony No 3
BBC Symphony Orchestra David Robertson conductor Marie Arnet soprano Alexandra Soumm violin Nicolas Altstaedt cello Igor Levit piano
Beethoven’s dynamic spirit was crucially significant to Michael Tippett and here, in an echo of our December concert, we’ll hear Beethoven’s own elegant Triple Concerto played by three superlative young BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists, beside Tippett’s Third Symphony. In this dramatic work Tippett confronts Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and its ecstatic vision of brotherhood with the tragic reality of the 20th century. In the wonderfully uplifting Blues of finale, sung here by Susan Bullock, he roots man’s essential state in sorrow rather than joy, while ultimately offering a dream of ‘the peaceable kingdom’.
