Brahms Tragic Overture
Szymanowski Symphony No 2
Brahms Symphony No 2

Valery Gergiev conductor
London Symphony Orchestra

Brahms’ Tragic Overture is the reflective, melancholy half of a pair of overtures he wrote over a summer holiday. Szymanowski’s chamber-like Second Symphony artfully interweaves layer upon layer of seemingly disparate musical ideas to form a complex tapestry that became one of the composer’s favourite of his own works. Brahms’ Symphony No 2 is often referred to as his ‘pastoral’ symphony because of its bucolic, spring-themed melodies.
