Twenty years after the advent of Book I, Bach assembled his second book of Preludes and Fugues. The Preludes of Book II explore a greater range of forms and styles than the first book, moving into experiments with dance-like forms, while the Fugues demonstrate an increasingly dense, intricate counterpoint with nine of the set containing no fewer than four independent, interweaving melodic lines.
